Making 'Do'

The dress on the left is from a charity shop. It was £8.50. I gave in to temptation despite it being a lot on the long side and with a provocatively plunging neckline.
So far it's taken me 3 weeks to unpick and cut the bottom layer. With the excess fabric I've redone the neckline and made it demure. As there's some more left, I'm going to attempt cap sleeves with it. If only my sewing machine liked the fabric.
My mum used to darn socks. Anybody still darn theirs?
